Big Lake

This weekend in Big Lake

Big Events in Big Lake this weekend!  It started off with the threat of snow (a little too little and a little too late) and rounded out with the Chamber’s Fishing Derby, the Trail Committee’s Ride and the real start of the Iron Dog Race.

It was as busy as summer usually is out here with Ice Fisherman scattered across the lake angling for that $20,000 tag and Snowmachiners slaloming in and around their freshly dug holes.

At the other corner of the lake, the real start to the Iron Dog Race (the World’s Longest Toughest Snowmobile Race) was in full action with thousands of spectators.  Although the ceremonial start these days occurs in Anchorage, the real start (when the clock begins) still  begins on the lake.  The ‘Pro-Class’ launched on Sunday morning for their ~2,000 mile trek to Nome and then Fairbanks!  Good Luck and Bon Voyage!

Up, up, up and Away!

Not to be outshone were a few parasailing-Skiers doing their thing and putting on a gravity defying show as they erratically skied and flew across the lake!

By night’s end, the crowds had packed up and returned south as  the snow flurries escaped to the north; and the peaceful calm returned to the lake as the moon stood over-watch for the sleepy residents of Alaska’s Playground – Big Lake.
